The project entitled, ‘Malls, Museums, and Supermarkets’, is an exploration of the places that provide us with food, clothing, and culture. I wanted to photograph how we, as the public, interact with these spaces and see what the results looked like. Inspired by the Subway Portraits of Walker Evans, I held my camera discretely to my side, in the vein of him tucking it between the buttons on his over coat. In this way I use my whole body as the framing device, moving around the scene to create a composition.

These photographs showcase the overwhelming abundance as well as the vacantness of these places. The subjects seem taken by the place, but also disengaged within their surroundings. The culture of excess that we live in can be overwhelming and by creating these photographs I am using my camera to bear witness to our current reality.
